Leave Your Burdens Behind
Posted by MyChoices on 06/8/08 in Self Improvement
Do feel as if you are walking through life carrying the huge burden of your worries and stresses on your back and shoulders, struggling to keep moving forward? Can you imagine that it is possible to move freely through life? That you can elicit a sigh of relief and feeling of lightness?
Imagination is a powerful human tool, and you can use it to take journeys to places without leaving your home. Because of this ability, you can lay your burdens down at the feet of a powerful being greater than yourself, Buddha or a mountain, whichever feels right for you. Thus, you can relieve yourself from everything that is weighing you down.
No matter how smart you are, capable or how diligently you work, no one can single handedly manage all the ups and downs, in and outs in the course of a life time. The universe was not set up for us to manage life single handedly. Thus, it behooves us to seek the assistance and guidance we deserve and need. Your wellbeing depends on your ability to let go of that which is weighing you down. Thoughts of worry and stress serves to create more of the same. If you want to create something different you need to focus on what you want to create instead of what you do not want.
This exercise is highly empowering. Visualize yourself carrying your worries and stresses to the feet of someone or something greater and more powerful or empowered than you. Begin by sitting with your eyes closed and envision an all powerful, all knowing, highly comforting being in the form that feels right for you, standing at the end of a road or tunnel. See yourself handing this being a container, such as a box or bag, that contains all the burdens you have been carrying. Watch yourself as you make your way to the being or if you chose a mountain, see the mountain. Then lay the container at the feet of the being or the base of the mountain.
After you place the container take a deep breath and blow it out slowly. Rest to the count of five and repeat. Repeat the deep breathing until you notice you feel lightness and relief. Express your gratitude, “Thank you ‘being,’ [’mountain’] for being here for me.” Turn around and visualize yourself leaving the burdens laying there as you walk away. You will be amazed at how much relief and liberation you will notice.
It is important to then focus on what you want to create. No sneaking back and dragging those old familiar burdens into your mind. Stop the ‘What if’ or ‘I can’t,’ story.
